Umrah is a deeply spiritual journey that allows Muslims to seek the blessings and mercy of Allah outside of the obligatory Hajj. While it can be performed at any time of the year, Umrah requires careful planning and proper knowledge of the rituals involved. Whether you’re going for the first time or have performed Umrah before, it’s important to follow the correct procedures to ensure a meaningful and accepted pilgrimage. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you through the process.
1. Understand the Significance of Umrah
Umrah is a highly recommended Sunnah and a means of spiritual purification. It involves fewer rituals than Hajj, but its significance is immense. Performing Umrah brings numerous rewards, such as forgiveness of sins and the chance to draw closer to Allah.
• Ihram (the state of sanctity) • Tawaf (circumambulation of the Kaaba) • Sa’i (walking between Safa and Marwah) • Halq or Taqsir (shaving or trimming the hair)
Before you begin your journey, there are several important steps to take to ensure you are fully prepared for Umrah:
• Sincere Intention (Niyyah): Ensure that your intention for performing Umrah is solely to seek Allah’s pleasure. • Learn the Rituals: Familiarize yourself with the step-by-step rituals of Umrah and the associated duas (supplications). It’s helpful to have a guidebook or app to assist you throughout the journey. • Repentance and Forgiveness: Seek forgiveness from Allah for any sins, and reconcile with others before you embark on the pilgrimage.
• Passport and Visa: Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months and that you have the necessary Umrah visa. Saudi Arabia issues specific visas for Umrah, which must be obtained in advance. • Travel Arrangements: Book your flights and accommodations through a trusted travel agency like Mosafir which provides trusted Umrah services. It’s a good idea to opt for a package that includes transportation to and from the holy sites. • Vaccinations: Ensure you’ve received all required vaccinations, including those for meningitis, as per Saudi regulations. • Ihram Clothing: Purchase the Ihram (two white, seamless cloths for men, while women wear their regular modest clothing). Ihram symbolizes purity and equality, putting aside worldly distinctions.
Ihram is a state of spiritual purity and physical cleanliness that must be entered before crossing the Miqat, the designated boundary around Makkah. The steps to enter Ihram are as follows: 1. Perform Ghusl (Full Body Washing): Clean yourself by performing Ghusl or Wudu (ablution) to purify your body. 2. Wear Ihram: Men should wear the two white sheets of Ihram, while women can wear any modest and plain attire (preferably white or light-colored). 3. Make Niyyah (Intention): After wearing Ihram, make the intention to perform Umrah by saying: “Labbayk Allahumma Umrah” (Here I am, O Allah, for Umrah). 4. Recite Talbiyah: Begin reciting the Talbiyah, a special invocation of Umrah: “Labbayk Allahumma labbayk, labbayk la shareeka laka labbayk, inna al-hamda wa’n-ni’mata laka wa’l-mulk, la shareeka lak.” (Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Verily, all praise, blessings, and sovereignty belong to You, You have no partner.) Continue reciting this throughout your journey until you reach the Kaaba.
• Cutting hair or nails • Using perfumes or scented products • Engaging in marital relations • Hunting or harming animals • Engaging in disputes or arguments
Once you arrive in Makkah, you’ll proceed to the Masjid al-Haram, where the Kaaba is located. The first major ritual is Tawaf, which involves walking around the Kaaba seven times in a counterclockwise direction. 1. Begin at the Black Stone: If possible, start your Tawaf by touching or pointing toward the Hajar al-Aswad (the Black Stone) and saying: “Bismillah, Allahu Akbar.” (In the name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest.) 2. Complete Seven Circuits: Walk around the Kaaba seven times, keeping the Kaaba on your left side. While making Tawaf, you can recite the Talbiyah, make personal duas, or read Quranic verses. 3. After Tawaf: Once you’ve completed seven circuits, perform two rak’ahs of prayer behind Maqam Ibrahim (the Station of Ibrahim) if possible. If it’s crowded, you can pray anywhere in the mosque. 4. Drink Zamzam Water: After Tawaf, drink from the Zamzam well, located within the mosque. It is a blessed and holy water, with great spiritual significance in Islam.
After Tawaf, the next step is Sa’i, which commemorates Hajar’s search for water for her son, Ismail. This involves walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah. 1. Begin at Safa: Start at the hill of Safa, facing the Kaaba, and make your Intention to perform Sa’i. Walk towards Marwah while reciting supplications or personal prayers. 2. Walk Seven Times: Complete seven circuits between the two hills. The distance between Safa and Marwah is about 450 meters, and you’ll cover approximately 3.15 km in total.
The final step of Umrah is the symbolic act of cutting your hair, which signifies humility and the completion of the pilgrimage. • For Men: Perform Halq (shaving the head) or Taqsir (trimming the hair). Shaving is recommended, but trimming is acceptable if you're planning to perform Hajj soon after. • For Women: Women should trim a small portion of their hair (about the length of a fingertip). Once this step is completed, you are officially out of the state of Ihram, and your Umrah is complete.
• Visit the Prophet’s Mosque (Masjid an-Nabawi) in Madinah: Although it is not a required part of Umrah, visiting Madinah is highly recommended. Pay your respects to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and visit his tomb in Masjid an-Nabawi. • Pray in Masjid al-Haram: Spend as much time as possible in the sacred mosque of Masjid al-Haram, praying and engaging in dhikr (remembrance of Allah).
• Stay Hydrated and Rested: The physical demands of Umrah, especially during Sa’i, can be taxing. Stay hydrated, rest when needed, and wear comfortable footwear. • Be Patient and Kind: The holy sites can get crowded, especially during peak seasons. Exercise patience and maintain good manners toward fellow pilgrims. • Respect Local Laws: Follow the rules and regulations set by the Saudi authorities regarding movement, accommodations, and health protocols.
Umrah is a journey of immense spiritual value, and performing it correctly ensures that you reap the full rewards of this blessed pilgrimage. By following these guidelines, preparing properly, and maintaining a sincere intention, you’ll be able to complete your Umrah successfully and come back spiritually rejuvenated, with a heart filled with gratitude and love for Allah.
